Ah, the sock bun. For working women everywhere, this is the hairstyle we’ve all been waiting for: a sleek updo that’s perfect for the office and can be done in under five minutes.
Though you can create this hairstyle easily with one of your own socks (simply cut off the toe portion and roll), I now create my buns with a hair donut instead. I found that the hair donut creates a much more sleek, perfected look – and I didn’t have to sacrifice any more socks in the process. You can get a hair donut at most beauty supply stores, and your local H&M usually has them for under $4.00.
You’ll need: One hair elastic, a round brush, 1 sock or hair donut, bobby pins, hairspray (optional).
Step 1: Gather your hair into a pony tail, taking care to decide where exactly your bun will sit. From experience, I’ve made my pony far too high before, making my bun look childish rather than chic.
Step 2: Take your sock or hair donut, and pull all hair into the center, keeping the sock or donut only about an inch or two from the top of your pony.
Step 3: Begin tucking the ends of your pony underneath your sock or donut, and roll down, taking care to roll evenly and include all pieces of hair.
Step 4: Secure any loose ends with bobby pins, and mist lightly with hairspray. Voilà! It may take a few tries to get it just right, but once you have it down pat, this hairstyle is a total lifesaver.
